Covering Your Personal Property in New York

Covering Your Personal Property in New York

Having the proper insurance for the items in your house is sometimes a coverage that New York homeowners may overlook.  You need to make certain you have enough insurance to cover your personal property as well as your home.

Personal Property Coverage - most insurance companies will use a percentage of the value of your home to determine the amount of personal property coverage.  This number, in some cases may be low, and you may need to provide evidence for the extra coverage.  This would be the amount, if you lose everything in a fire, that they would replace.

Special Items - you may need extra coverage if you have valuables known as a floater.  This adds additional coverage for a particular item in the home.  It may require an appraisal of the item as proof of value.

If you’re Not at Home - many times your New York homeowners policy will cover your personal property even if you’re not at home.  If you have an item stolen in a hotel or from your car, you can make a claim against your policy to cover it.

Be sure to ask Gregg Stephens Insurance at 516-594-0438 if you need extra coverage for your personal property.
